Description
This sensitively modeled naturally posed lost wax bronze measures 3" tall x 8 3/4" x 7 3/8" and is signed, dated and numbered Sanford 1911 iii. Edward Field Sanford, Junior (1886-1951) was born in New York and studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. He attended the Academie Julian (Paris) and the Royal Academy at Munich and aspired to be an architectural sculptor. The Core Mausoleum, Norfolk, Virginia and the Charles Francis Adams Memorial [Washington and Lee University] are among his earliest commissions. Fountains for New York estates and sculpture for the State Capitol at Sacramento established his professional reputation along with a colossal figure of "Victory" for the Payne Whitney Gymnasium, Yale. From 1923 to 1925 he reorganized the department of sculpture of the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. Among his last commissions were a series of twelve colossal panels for the base of the New York State Roosevelt Memorial. He retired from sculpting due to ill health in 1933. These little beauties are among his earliest works and the composition and modeling leave little surprise at the rich career that was to follow.WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE IF ALLOWED BY USPS.
