    Description

Up for auction/sale is an aluminum ashtray from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co, shaped to represent the USS Leyte, one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during and shortly after World War 2 for the United States Navy.
I can't date this ashtray specifically, but construction of the USS Leyte began in Feb. 1944 and was launched in Aug. 1945, so circa 1945.
For being 75 years old, the ashtray is in great overall condition with only minimal dings to the aluminum and only light surface staining. The rough overall dimensions are 18 7/8" wide, 3" deep (front to back), and 1 1/4" depth, weighing 1lb 6oz.
I have described this shipyard collectible as best I can, but to augment my description I have provided several high-resolution images from varying angles, and with close-ups to allow for a detailed review of quality, condition, and desirability.
This will be packaged with care to best ensure this rarely found Newport News aluminum ashtray arrives as pictured and described.
