This incredible work of art was carved out of a single piece of aged golden teak wood by Master Somsak Meewan about 25 years ago. It is a completely unique design... one of a kind. The three elephant heads are
extremely accurate in scale and realistic in its form, patina, and touch. The detail is impeccable. This piece has been part of Mr. Meewan's personal collection for many years and it was a tough decision for him to offer it up for sale. Mr. Soms
ak Meewan is considered one of the best (if not the best) living elephant wood carver in Thailand today. He is a fourth generation woodcarver specializing in elephant carvings and hails from a long line of elephant mahouts (trainers). Thai culture revers
elephants above all other creatures. In the past, elephants were used for such tasks as clearing forest and transportation. Until recently many Thai people still kept elephants, but nowadays most elephants in the region are kept in conservation centers. Often times herds of wooden elephants are placed in front of spirit houses (as seen in the photo above) to bring good luck to the spirits of dead relatives and transport them through the spirit world. Spirit Houses are very common throughout the region; families build them adjacent to their homes as dwellings for deceased relatives.
