    Description

    Authorized replica of museum owned original artwork!  (The only way to display this beautiful sculpture is by owning an authorized copy)
    I am pleased to offer for sale here a copyrighted cast stone replica of a sculpture made in 1935 called "The New One" by John B. Flannagan (1896-1942).  Flannagan was a well-known sculptor in the thirties, with his work exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, among others.
    Signed "AMR C (Copyright mark) 1963" underneath the body, this sculpture weighs 12+ pounds with the attached copper base and is about 11.5" long, 5.5" tall and 6.5" wide.
    Based on the weight and appearance, this copy is probably "cast" (powdered) stone; there were versions made in resin as well.
    It is a copy of the original, which resides at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
    The museum described the original: "
    The figure of an embryo shortly before birth or a newborn baby incised in a large bluestone is a perfect example of the technique of 'direct carving'."  The original can be viewed online at the museum website.
    This particular replica is scarce and hard to find.
    Alva Museum Replicas, Inc. was a company founded in 1948 that hired artists to create authorized copies of museum artworks.  The company is no longer in business.
    Condition appears to be as-made, with no losses or other flaws found.
