Description
Sculpture, in patinated walnut, representing a lion in agony.Under the sculpture we can read a dedication in Latin and two dates in Roman numerals.
This sculpture is inspired by the famous Lion of Lucerne, commemorating the sacrifice of the slain Swiss Guards,
August 10, 1792,
during the capture of the Tuileries by the revolutionaries; designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen, this sculpture was made between 1820 and 1821.
Period: end of the 19th century.
Condition: a slight slit visible at the level of the left paw as well as on the bottom of the left side, it may be missing an element on the left rear part (the shield bearing the coat of arms of Switzerland and visible on the
artwork
original).
