extremely accurate in scale and realistic in its form, patina and touch. The detail is impeccable... even down to the veins that appear in the elephant's ears. ak Meewan is considered one of the best (if not the best) living elephant wood carver in Thailand today. He is a fourth generation wood carver specializing in elephant carvings and hails from a long line of elephant mahouts (trainers). Thai culture revers
elephants above all other creatures. In the past, elephants were used for such task as clearing forest and transportation. Until recently many Thai people still kept elephants, but nowadays most elephants in the region are kept in conservation centers. Often times herds of wooden elephants are placed in front of spirit houses (as seen in the photo above) to bring good luck to the spirits of dead relatives and transport them through the spirit world. Spirit Houses are very common throughout the region; families build them adjacent to their homes as dwellings for deceased relatives.
