Description
Alvin Marshall (Navajo 1959- ) is uniquely known for the fine detail, facial expressions and deep spirituality he achieves in his carved alabaster sculptures. He is most certainly one of the best stone carvers among all of the famous names. Early on (1983), he was awarded the "Best Sculptor of the Year" award at the famous Heard Museaum's Native American Art Show. Many exhibitions and awards have followed, including high-end galleries, various museums, and important private collections. His best pieces spend no time on the market because his collectors recognize those that stand out and purchase them immediately. This one meets that description and is one of the finest and most intricate you will find."Holy Man With Cougar" showcases the best of the artist's skills and devotion to his culture, nature, and their many symbols. The sculpture has two distinct "sides" (the Holy Man on one and the cougar on the other), but through his mastery with symbols and integration of the carving, they become one. Closer photos show some of the intricacies of the symbolism (eagle, trees, and other markings).
The sculpture is carved from Honey Alabaster from Utah. Height 18" Width 14" weight 46 pounds. It is signed in the stone by the artist. The signed Certificate of Authenticity includes a retail appraisal of 00. We are not selling retail and the opening bid price is less than one half of that.
