Wonderful original terra cotta bust by important artist Yvonne Serruys (1873-1953), a prominent sculptor who lived and worked in Belgium and France.
Serruys was born in Menen and studied painting and drawing under Emile Claus. She also studied under Georges Lemmen. Following a tour of the Mediterranean, she began entering the Salons in Paris beginning in 1898. About that time she decided to become a sculptor and studied under Egide Rombaux. In 1904, she established her own studio in Paris and was quite prolific and well received.  In 1920, she was awarded the Legion d'honneur in 1920, and in 1934 she was made an officer of the Order of Leopold. Upon her death, she left a number of her pieces to the town of Menen, and they are now held by the Stadsmuseum 't Schippershof.
Serruys created a number of public commissions, including a monument to her instructor Emile Claus in Ghent and a work for Paul Cambon in Tunis, as well as a war memorial in her home town of Menen.
The artist's auction high is in the tens of thousands of dollars.
The work at hand is signed "Yvonne S" and dated 1899, as shown in a close-up.  It is set upon an old wood plinth.  Details are remarkable, such as in the meticulously carved and incised ruff.  The sculpture measures about 9 1/4 high, 8 1/4 inches wide, and 5 inches deep.  It stands about 1 foot high including the plinth.
CONDITION: Has some expected age wear such as surface rubbing and soiling, but looks great.  I do not see any chips, cracks, or repairs.  Old patina shows some handling wear upon close inspection.  Please see the images taken from many angles, as they are part of the description and give a good indication of condition.
